How can you tell if you are a true MSP or a mere mouse? A mouse is afraid of the Boogeyman and MSPs aren’t. And, in the channel, the Boogeyman happens to be Dell (NASDAQ: DELL). That is what resellers called the vendor years ago when it was still pushing PC boxes to gain entrance into corporate accounts. It’s the truth: Dell haunted the channel back then, and fear can be a pretty good motivator.

Why am I still writing columns about making the transition to managed services? Because, according to various polls I’ve seen, 20 percent to 25 percent of solution providers still are not offering any type of managed services, and about 70 percent of the ones that do admit it is not the bulk of their business.

Well, it’s not quite the same as Mohammad Ali’s return to the ring, but it is a return nonetheless. I have been involved in the channel on and off for the past 22-plus years, and just when I think I’ve escaped, they pull me back in. The VAR Guy can be quite persuasive, especially after a glass of the local Applebee’s finest red wine swill.
