T-Mobile Outlines Plans for 3G Upgrade

Running in fourth place to fellow wireless giants Verizon, AT&T and Sprint, T-Mobile has outlined plans to better its 3G network.

T-Mobile announced that its 3G service will reach 200 million people by the end of 2009, including most major markets. The improvements will include making 7.2Mbps downstream available on the whole network, which will greatly benefit USB modems and new smartphones that desperately need the faster speed.

Hoping to keep pace with Sprint – which is rolling out 4G networks – and Verizon, which is deploying LTE, T-Mobile plans to provide 21Mbps downstream on its HSPA+ network, which is currently up and running in Philadelphia.

T-Mobile lost more than 75,000 subscribers in the third quarter, but made more money on data services than it during the same period last year.
