Digium Updates Asterisk REST Interface, Remote Administrator Tools
Digium has updated its open-source communications software’s interface and security features. The Huntsville, Alabama-based communications technology company today announced Asterisk 13, a new version of its open-source communications software.
Asterisk 13 is “a stable, feature-rich and developer-friendly platform for adding media capabilities to any business application,” according to Digium.
The new version of Digium’s open-source communications software is the company’s first long-term service (LTS) release since 2012 and provides users with:
- New bridging and media core
- The ability to monitor Asterisk’s security in real-time
- Updated Asterisk REST Interface (ARI)
“When we set out to build Asterisk 13, our goal was to polish all of the massive improvements previously made in Asterisk 12 into something that can be relied on by anyone who needs to develop, deploy or integrate media into business applications,” David Deaton, Digium’s vice president of engineering, said in a prepared statement.

Digium adds SIP trunking
In addition to Asterisk 13, Digium this week launched Digium SIP Trunking, a cloud service that is designed to make it easier for business to deploy voice-over-IP (VoIP) for Asterisk, Switchvox and other IP phone systems.
The new SIP trunking service enables Digium to offer end-to-end communications from VoIP connectivity to IP phones, according to the company.
“Digium believes our customers and the Asterisk community are excited to be able to get their SIP service from the same company that develops the unified communications (UC) software platforms they rely on every day,” Mark Amick, Digium’s director of product management, told Talkin’ Cloud.
This service features:
- Local and toll-free numbers from other carriers
- Multiple codecs and T.38 fax pass-through
- No setup fees
Amick added his company will explore new ways to enhance its cloud services portfolio as well.
“Digium is extremely excited about the addition of SIP Trunking to our cloud services portfolio and we will continue to enhance and expand the features, services and capabilities we offer to our customers, partners and the Asterisk community through Digium Cloud Services,” he said.
