Sipera Adds Features to IPCS 520

Sipera Systems Inc., a security provider for VoIP, mobile and multimedia communications, has unveiled new features for its IPCS 520, including a security policy framework, intrusion detection and prevention, and troubleshooting features. The Sipera IPCS 520 allows secure integration of dual-mode phones with the corporate IP PBX. The company says this thwarts VoIP exploits that are growing as dual-mode phones and other VoIP services become more prevalent. The Sipera IPCS 520 supports 100,000 users and 10,000 simultaneous sessions with 2gbps of throughput in IDS/IPS mode.

Bluetooth Tackles Ease of Use, Battery Life

The new Bluetooth Core Specification Version 2.1 will include improved pairing making the initial connection of Bluetooth devices easier by reducing the number of steps in the pairing process. Users can also look forward to lower power consumption and increased battery life for devices such as mice, keyboards and watches. Bluetooth SIG also is working with WiMedia Alliance to create a high-speed Bluetooth channel that utilizes ultra-wideband technology.

Junpier Updates SBR SIM Server

Juniper Networks Inc. has added new features to its Steel- Belted Radius (SBR) SIM/AKA Server, which is available through channel partners. The device authenticates users over various wireless access networks; this allows mobile operators to extend the range and reach of their service coverage. Version 5.4 now supports the SIGTRAN (signaling transport) protocol so operators with legacy authentication infrastructure can move to IP-based signaling networks. The enhanced SBR SIM Server further has features that support subscriber authentication via 802.1X and non-802.1X hotspots, unlicensed mobile access, generic access networks and femtocell technologies.

CISCO, AT&T Team on 3G Wireless WAN

Cisco Systems Inc. will join up with Cingular/AT&T Inc. to jointly market a 3G wireless WAN. The two will bundle up the AT&T Wireless WAN Connectivity Service and the new Cisco 3G-Enabled Wireless WAN High-Speed WAN Interface Card (HWIC) for routers. The wireless module, based on Sierra Wireless embedded technology, is enabled for AT&Ts UMTS/HSDPA-based BroadbandConnect service (or can be configured for EV-DO networks), targeted at companies that need diverse broadband backup, work in ad hoc situations such as construction sites, work in rural areas and the like. On a broader level, the move helps extend the reach of the WAN and enables greater convergence for the delivery of unified communications across a variety of networks. AT&T and Cisco channels will go to market with the solution beginning in June.

Sprint Unveils Dual-Sided Phone

Sprint Nextel Corp. has unveiled the Samsung SPH-m620 UpStage dual-faced phone geared at the split personality of todays population. One side is devoted to traditional phone activities with a keypad and small screen for calls, text messaging, and corporate e-mail and contact management, while the flip side is a MP3 player. Users press a button to switch between sides. It also comes with a 1.3-megapixel camera and Bluetooth.

HSUPA to Appear in Fujitsu Notebooks

Sierra Wireless has announced that Fujitsu Siemens Computers has selected the new Sierra Wireless MC8780 embedded module for integration into the newly launched LIFEBOOK P7230 professional notebook. The LIFEBOOK P7230 is the first in the product line to migrate to the Sierra Wireless HSUPA module and is expected to begin commercial shipments in Europe this summer. The Sierra Wireless MC8780 embedded module offers faster download speeds than previous models, with peak data rates of up to 7.2mbps. In addition, it is the first Sierra Wireless module designed for HSUPA networks, with uplink speeds more than five times faster than those available on current networks up to 2mbps.

Verizon Wireless Launches New V CAST-Ready Phones

Verizon Wireless has debuted two new phones LG MobileComm U.S.A. Inc.s VX9400 and Samsungs SCH-u620. Both phones support Verizons V CAST Mobile TV, V CAST Music and Video, Get It Now and Mobile Web 2.0. The VX9400 has a large color LCD screen and Bluetooth capabilities for certain profiles, as well as a 1.3-megapixel camera/camcorder. The SCHu620 features a two-inch QVGA 240-by-320 pixel LCD screen, a V CAST Mobile TV key and a retractable V CAST Mobile TV antenna. It also boasts stereo Bluetooth support for enhanced audio.

Palm Introduces New Hands-Free Car Kits

Palm Inc. has added to its line of hands-free accessories, including three car kits and a new combination GPS/hands-free speakerphone product available for Treo smartphones. The hands-free car kits include the Comfort Plus DSP Hands-free Car Kit for Treo 680 and Treo 750 customers; the Take&Talk DSP Cradle + CarTalk Hands-free Car Kit, also for the Treo 680 and Treo 750 with functions such as digital signal processing technology and an extended antenna; and the Take&Talk DSP Hands-free Car Kit Cradle for existing THB Bury UNI System 8 car kit users who are ready to switch to a Treo 650 or Treo 700.
