Virtela Launches Enterprise Services Cloud
Virtela, which bills itself as the world’s largest independent managed network services company, has launched the Virtela Enterprise Services Cloud (ESC), a carrier-independent open cloud architecture to deliver anything as a service from anywhere across any network. Moreover, they’re launching the “Virtela Cloud-Based Application Acceleration Service,” which does exactly what it says on the tin for $5 a day. All of those claims sound pretty lofty. Here’s a closer look at the Virtela effort.
By combining mobility, security, and networking into one architecture, Virtela CEO Vab Goel says, organizations are enabled to optimize access to enterprise applications, clouds, or data center resources regardless of the underlying technology or provider. It’s even designed to work with virtual devices. In short, Virtela ESC is designed to avoid cloud vendor lock-in by helping to combine vital cloud services, regardless of the source, into a single, efficient package.
As for the application acceleration service, it’s $5/day/branch location, and it boosts speeds of cloud-delivered data exponentially without requiring extra bandwidth or equipment. Goel says web-based collaboration platforms load 6 to 10 times faster when used with Virtela ESC and the accelerator, and ERP and CRM solutions from companies like Salesforce.com and Oracle can experience bumps of 5 to 13 times. Goel is so confident in the acceleration service’s success, Virtela will offer 250% of your money back if you’re not satisfied.
Goel bills Virtela ESC as the logical next step from platforms like Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) – they provide compute and storage, but Virtela has a real managed solution, he says. Also unlike EC2, once deployed, Virtela monitors and manages your cloud 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, fixing problems before they arise and ensuring unbroken communications, they say.
To be perfectly honest, I’m not sure how Virtela ESC fits into the broader cloud landscape. It seems like it wants to be everything to everyone — but that may be just what the market needs. MSPs can resell Virtela’s new solutions, and it’ll be their customers who really decide its success.
