Google Apps for Resellers: Update
During the recent IO Developer Conference in San Francisco, Google Channel Manager Jeff Ragusa (pictured) offered an update on the Google Apps Reseller program (see video below). But that’s not all. During a separate webcast today, Google gave participants an update on the Google Apps Enterprise strategy. Here’s the scoop.
First, the video with Ragusa:
And Now, Today’s News
Now, a recap of today’s Google Enterprise Apps webcast. According to the Google Webcast:
- Google has more than 1,000 employees focused on the Google Apps for Enterprise initiative.
- More than 500,000 businesses had embraced Google Apps by mid-2008. Today, that figure exceeds 1.75 million businesses, with companies like Genetech hopping on the bandwagon.
- Google evangelized a new “Google Apps Sync for Microsoft Outlook.” The company claims the plug-in “syncs Outlook with Apps just like Outlook natively syncs with Exchange.”
The G Factor
To be sure, VARs and MSP software providers are keeping close tabs on Google. As ConnectWise CEO Arnie Bellini recently quipped, “every day Google doesn’t compete with us is a good day.”
The VAR Guy must concede: He’s heard from a few former Postini partners that grew frustrated with Google after the search giant acquired Postini (a messaging security company) in July 2007. And plenty of on-premise VARs wonder if they can really profit from Google’s cloud applications.
Still, The VAR Guy is hearing from happy Google Apps partners out in the market. True believers include Horizon Info Services — a solutions provider that aggressively promotes its Google relationship to help educate customers about cloud and SaaS (software as a service) options.
