From Windows to Mac… And Back
When Nine Lives Media Inc. launched The VAR Guy’s website in January 2008, most staff members were running Mac OS as their primary operating environment. But the times they are a changin’. The VAR Guy just received word that Nine Lives Media Inc. CEO and Co-founder Amy Katz appears to be making the move from Mac OS X to Windows 7. But here’s the twist: Getting from Mac to Windows may involve a wild ride on a Harley Davidson. Here’s the story — as only The VAR Guy can present it.
Our tale begins a few months ago. Katz was hard at work on a PowerPoint presentation when… crash. PowerPoint for Mac died. The horror…. the horror. Even worse, the application crashes have continued on Mac OS. Now, Katz is ready to open Nine Lives Media Inc.’s expansive vault (translation: her company checkbook) to buy a Windows 7 PC.
Sort of ironic: A bad Microsoft application experience on Mac OS is sending Katz back to Windows. But let’s stick with the blog at hand.
Hitching A New Ride
Which PC supplier will Katz work with? Hmmm. For the potential answer, let’s jump to last week’s CompTIA Breakaway conference in San Antonio, Texas. PC makers were mostly quiet at the show — but there was some surprising commotion at the event. While a couple of industry coaches nearly came to blows on the trade show floor (… that’s a story for another time…), Lenovo Director of SMB Jay McBain allegedly was busy riding a Harley — in the conference center.
The VAR Guy has known McBain for about two years. Which brings us back to the point of this blog entry: At a time when small MSPs and VARs worry about big vendors encroaching on their turf, McBain is a friendly reminder that people buy from people. And in this case, you can bet Katz is dialing McBain for some laptop advice.
Disclosure: Lenovo sponsors The VAR Guy’s website. But our resident blogger has been a ThinkPad fan since the days of the Butterfly, dating back to 1995. The VAR Guy suspects Katz will take flight with a ThinkPad any day now…
