VMware (VMW) is extending its reach into the world of health care with Care Systems Analytics, a new version of its existing vCloud system meant to help professionals monitor the performance of electronic medical record (EMR) systems. The vCloud for Healthcare Solutions allows medical personnel to collect key data from their records system and report on the system’s overall performance.
Thus far, Care Systems Analytics has been tested with the Epic EMR system, one of the healthcare industry’s most prevalent EMR systems. InformationWeek reported that VMware has designed its vCenter Operations Manager to extract metrics from Epic for analysis, with the resulting data being displayed on a dashboard. The system will allow IT managers to check the amount of time needed to pull up a patient record and determine if there are any delays that may be bogging down the system. Care Systems Analytics can also be customized for specific areas throughout the hospital to the schedules and expected latencies that are acceptable in each area of operations, said VMware.
VMware’s push into the healthcare vertical is part of the company’s longstanding goal of improving medical infrastructure, said Drew Koerner, the chief Healthcare Solutions architect at VMware. Koerner told InformationWeek that the virtualization giant has been increasing its healthcare personnel for the past several years, as the implications of effective healthcare infrastructure have increasingly become more important to manage.
VMware is planning to further its reach into the healthcare industry with upcoming integration with VMware Log Insight, the company’s server log analysis system, which Koerner said will allow for further analysis of healthcare system performance. Last month, VMware unveiled the first details on the upcoming release of the vCenter Log Insight 2.0 console, which is expected to significantly improve query and data collection performance once it is available later this year.
