Symantec Continues Cloud Storage Push With Doyenz
Symantec continues to push beyond its on-premises software heritage, partnering up with a range of MSP- and cloud-centric software companies. The latest Symantec move involves Symantec Backup Exec and Doyenz, which develops a cloud-based backup and disaster recovery (BDR) service.
According to a prepared statement from both companies:
“Through integration with Doyenz’s cloud-based recovery technology, Symantec now offers the Backup Exec Cloud DR Option as part of the offering. This addition empowers customers to leverage RaaS in the cloud, whether they are managing planned or unexpected downtime.”
RaaS is short for recovery as a service, an increasingly popular term among managed services providers and cloud services providers. Doyenz claims its solution enables the recovery of VMware vSphere environments in the cloud in less than 15 minutes.
The Symantec-Doyenz relationship is part of an industry-wide dance, where key vendors are partnering up to strengthen their competitive offerings. In recent months, competition between BDR providers (such as Axcient, Continuum partnering with Datto, Doyenz and Zenith Infotech) seems to have intensified.
Last I heard, Doyenz was considering potential venture capital opportunities — though the company was growing organically and not in any urgent need of cash. Also, Doyenz has been making moves on the international front. A recent example: Doyenz says Himag Solutions has become the first UK client to use the rCloud service in a new London data center.
Meanwhile, Symantec itself is undergoing a cloud and managed services transformation. The company in November 2011 announced a managed services partner push, integrating its software with a range of RMM (remote monitoring and management) software providers. Moreover, Symantec has introduced a cloud version of Backup Exec.
