Open Source Partnerships On the Rise
Red Hat. Novell. MySQL. Sure, you know the mainstream open source companies. But take a closer look and you’ll find a growing list of small open source firms making channel pushes.
The VAR Guy is hearing more and more buzz about Levanta, a Linux management company that’s recruiting partners across the world. Systems integrators are also lining up to support Alfresco, an enterprise content management company that has close relationships with Red Hat and MySQL.
Meanwhile, big distributors are keeping close tabs on the open source sector. Ingram Micro, for instance, recently agreed to distribute Collax Linux.
Ingram’s commitment to alternative operating sytems shows just how much the software market has changed in the past decade. In 1995, it was nearly impossible to find alternatives to Windows 95. IBM’s OS/2 was on its last legs and Apple was nearly bankrupt. Today, the software sector is rich with open source alternatives.
Now, if only The VAR Guy could find the time to try them all.
