Dell’s Killer Enterprise Combo: Haas, Swainson?
Michael Dell is busy hiring heavy hitters to make sure the PC giant scores bigger deals in networking, storage, servers and enterprise software. The two names to know: Enterprise Solutions President Marius Haas (pictured, left) and Dell Software President John Swainson (right). But do Swainson and Haas know each other — and do they know Dell Channel Chief Greg Davis?
Haas is best known for building HP’s networking business. Swainson, previously CEO of CA Technologies, is seeking generate $5 billion in annual software sales by 2016. Together, they could help to transform Dell into a converged data center giant — offering servers, networking and storage hardware backed by IT management tools (Quest Software) and data protection software (AppAssure).
Haas and Swainson are marching forward at Dell during a critical time at the PC giant. The company’s most recent quarterly earnings disappointed investors as PC sales and profits continued to sag. But, Dell does have a growing, intriguing lineup of enterprise-class hardware and software.
The two big questions:
- Can Haas and Swainson develop a working relationship with each other, making sure that the whole (Dell Enterprise) is greater than the sum of the parts (hardware plus software)?
- Can the duo also work closely with Channel Chief Greg Davis?
Dell’s channel has gained momentum promoting EqualLogic, Compellent and other enterprise-class solutions. And Davis has worked overtime to earn the respect of PartnerDirect members. If he can help Haas and Swainson to connect with Dell’s best channel partners, the synergies could be very intriguing.
Admitted, that’s a lot of variables. The VAR Guy hopes to speak with Davis in the next few days… and perhaps Dell’s channel chief will have a chance to share his thoughts on Haas, Swainson and the opportunities ahead.
