Gartner has released its Magic Quadrant for Unified Communications for Midsize Enterprises, North America.

Mitel (MITL), Cisco Systems (CSCO), Avaya and ShoreTel (SHOR) topped Gartner’s new Magic Quadrant for Unified Communications (UC) for Midsize Enterprises, North America.

Each of these UC services providers was named a Magic Quadrant Leader, Gartner said, which indicates that its UC portfolio is “specifically positioned with features and functionality to meet the needs of midsize businesses.”

In addition, Gartner outlined each Magic Quadrant Leader’s strengths:

  • Mitel — Mitel’s integration flexibility is a core strength, according to Gartner. The technology research firm also pointed out that Mitel’s channel initiatives and recent rebranding could help it grow its midmarket UC business and reach many midsize businesses across North America.

  • Cisco — Gartner noted that Cisco sells its products through its channel partners, offers hybrid on-premises and cloud options and has agreements for transferring licenses from on-premises to hosted environments.

  • Avaya — Avaya represents a globally recognized brand with a history of providing telephony in the North American market. It currently offers “a comprehensive unified communication and contact center portfolio with a robust feature set,” Gartner said.

  • ShoreTel — ShoreTel provides a solution that is easy to use, Gartner said, and features a simple implementation process. Also, ShoreTel is working with third-party providers to enhance its functionality beyond its portfolio.

The global UC market is expected to grow over the next few years, which could create many new opportunities for UC services providers as well.

For example, Transparency Market Research has predicted that this sector could be worth $61.9 billion by 2018. The market research firm added that UC “promotes smooth flow of communication,” and the rising demand for video-based communications and bring-your-own-device (BYOD) could drive the segment’s growth.
