VMworld: VMware Says Let’s Virtualize 90% of Server Workloads
Roughly 60 percent of server workloads are now virtualized, and VMware (NYSE: VMW) wants to push that figure to 90 percent, according to incoming CEO Pat Gelsinger. That’s the message from VMworld 2012 today. The big question for MSPs: Do you have the right talent, tool set and business focus to manage all of those virtualized customer systems — regardless of their location?
There are dozens of IT management software companies here, but few from the MSP market. I spotted some familiar names like ManageEngine, 6fusion (including N-able veteran Rob Bissett) and Quest Software (promoter of PacketTrap MSP and PSA) on the conference show flow. But there are 20,000 people here and scores of vendors claiming they can help to managed public and private clouds, plus physical and virtual systems.
VMware is trying to rally the industry around vCloud Suite 5.1, which combines company’s virtualization, cloud infrastructure and management portfolio into a single SKU for partners and customers. But for the SMB market, VMware is promoting VMware vSphere Essentials Plus and introducing VMware vSphere 5.1 Standard with Operations Management.
Those efforts come a few weeks before Microsoft launches Windows Server 2012 with enhanced Hyper-V. During a Q&A sessions, current VMware CEO Paul Maritz said it’s more of the same from Microsoft — “good enough” technology for servers, but the game has changed and the world now wants software-defined datacenters, he insisted.
VMware continues to pitch virtualized server, storage and network capabilities — including the Nicira acquisition, which the company completed last week.
A side note: More than 850 companies are now emerging VMware cloud services providers, according to VMware Chief Marketing Officer Rick Jackson. Those companies are leveraging VMware’s service provider licensing business model. That should be an ah-hah moment for MSPs that are still clinging to physical system management or traditional software licensing. More thoughts soon about VMware’s big service provider push over on Talkin’ Cloud, MSPmentor’s sister site, later today.
