Persistent Systems has formed a partnership with Dell to provide integrated cloud-based instant disaster recovery services. The offering will be based on Persistent’s rCloud cloud-based disaster recovery service and Dell’s AppAssure data protection software.

The joint offering is meant to be a scalable disaster recovery offering that provides both onsite and cloud-based instant disaster recovery without the need to rip and replace existing environments.

Although not needing to rip and replace is a great feature, what seems really interesting is this idea of “instant” disaster recovery. It also begs the question: How instant are we talking about?

“With this partnership, we are able to extend Dell AppAssure’s proven onsite backup and recovery solutions with our powerful cloud-based disaster recovery service as a single, robust and easy to implement and fully cloud-enabled business continuity solution,” said Nara Rajagopalan, chief product officer at Persistent Systems, in a prepared statement. “Our integrated offering means customers aren’t required to rip and replace their existing infrastructure; they can simply build on top of it—a huge savings in time and money.”

The way the solution works is that AppAssure provides the performance and flexibility for Windows and Linux backups, as well as the replication and recovery options. Persistent’s rCloud Universal Architecture offering provides the instant restore capabilities, which support the upload of changes to systems in a secure and proprietary format.

According to Persistent, once the data has been received at the rCloud data center, backups are immediately written to virtual disks that can be booted instantly in a secure recovery environment for “instant and easy recovery.”

“Combining Dell AppAssure’s key software and hardware capabilities with rCloud 4 services from Persistent Systems enables us to deliver intuitive and channel-friendly support for image based backup and disaster recovery services in the cloud today,” said Todd Fredrick, executive director of Dell AppAssure, in a prepared statement.
