Barracuda Adds AWS Support to Backup Product

With the expanded support for Barracuda Backup, business can send data to AWS, Barracuda Cloud or another backup appliance.

Barracuda Networks on Tuesday expanded support for its Barracuda Backup – Intronis MSP Edition to Amazon Web Services (AWS). Up until now, businesses could send data to the Barracuda Cloud or another backup appliance.

Replication support for AWS allows customers to choose to replicate from an on-premises physical or virtual backup appliance to AWS. Barracuda is an AWS Advanced Technology partner and also offers firewall solutions in AWS.

Barracuda Backup is an end-to-end solution that provides customers, resellers and MSPs with the ability to replicate to their own AWS Simple Storage Service (S3) bucket – and offers the option of choosing where the data resides while also giving them control over their replicated backup data, the vendor said.

Additionally, the product does not require users to deploy compute resources in AWS to enable the replication process, and it does not require that users become AWS infrastructure experts in order to install and configure replication and restore capabilities. Resellers and customers who have a basic understanding of AWS infrastructure will be able to set up replication quickly, and no cloud-side tuning will be required on the part of the customer.

“Efficient data protection, in the cloud or on-premises, includes a strategy to rapidly recover data in the event of data loss or disaster, as well as the many security practices involved in preventing unauthorized access,” said Rod Mathews, senior vice president and general manager, data protection solutions at Barracuda. “The new release gives customers and resellers adopting public cloud the flexibility to replicate data to AWS with the same simplicity — providing a choice of deployment options with the ability to maintain ownership and control of cloud data,” he added.

This is the latest expansion of the Barracuda Backup – Intronis MSP Edition. Earlier this summer, the vendor added monitoring and management service features.

A recently published white paper – “Unlocking the Benefits of Public Cloud” – a Barracuda funded study by research firm Vanson Bourne, took a look at the usage, benefits, challenges, and security trends that organizations experience around public cloud. The study surveyed 1,300 cloud-savvy respondents from three geographies — Americas, Europe Middle East/Africa (EMEA), and Asia/Pacific (APAC).

Taking a sneak peek: The report notes that currently about 40 percent of organizations’ infrastructure runs in the public cloud; in two years that figure rises to 56 percent, and in five years that percentage reaches almost 70 percent. U.S. companies have the most infrastructure in the public cloud (about 44 percent), closely followed by EMEA (42 percent) and APAC(35 percent)

More than four in five (80 percent) organizations use public cloud for storage (83 percent), data recovery (62 percent), and website and application hosting (58 percent).
