Unified Communications: Intermedia Reports Strong Hosted PBX Momentum

In mid-2010, Intermedia decided to bolster its Microsoft Exchange business with a new SMB-targeted hosted PBX service to provide customers with low-cost Internet telephony integrated with their messaging system. Fast forward to the present, and Intermedia is ready to brag about their customer momentum, with adoption doubling month-over-month since August 2010. Here’s the scoop.

Why are customers embracing the hosted PBX service? Three prime reasons, Intermedia says:

  • OCS Calling: The ability to click-to-call any instant messaging contact has seen usage more than double, meaning users get the point.

  • Voice Menu: Companies using PBX have apparently embraced automated attendants to answer and route incoming calls.

  • Voicemail to Email: And unsurprisingly, employees love having their voicemail messages dropped straight in the inbox.

Intermedia spends a lot of time in that press release reaffirming their value and higher functionality over other VoIP and cloud telephone tool providers like Skype and Google Voice. But even if true, Intermedia still faces stiff competition from companies like M5 Networks and Alteva with similar philosophies towards Microsoft-integrated VoIP. Intermedia may be the largest independent provider of hosted Exchange out there, but UC is a world waiting to be conquered.

All eyes are on Microsoft and UC with the imminent launch of Lync, the re-branded Office Communications Server. Keep watching for more.
