The Lumia 925 the highly anticipated, new flagship smartphone from Nokia, aimed at both the business user and general consumer is making it debut this week in Europe, with parts of Asia expected to follow soon. That leaves U.S. customers wondering when they might get the device.
It was widely reported when the Finland-based manufacturer held a media event debuting the new device last month that, surprisingly enough, T-Mobile would get an exclusive on it in the U.S. Then came the scuttlebutt that AT&T which previously has nabbed the exclusives on flagship Lumias would also get the 925, either at the same time as T-Mo or sometime down the road. Stay tuned.
The new phone comes with a 4.5-inch display; a dual-core, 1.5GHz processor; 16GB or built-in storage and 1GB of RAM, Phones Review UK noted. One of the most talked-about features is the PureView 8.7MP, rear-facing camera. It weighs less than five ounces and is just one-third of an inch thick.
Nokia, once the world’s biggest cellphone-maker, fell on some hard times when Apple and a handful of Android manufacturers ran away with the smartphone revolution. A partnership with Microsoft and its Windows Phone operating system has been slow to take off, but recent forecasts indicate Windows Phone shipments will almost catch iPhone shipments by 2017.
Lumias have received generally positive reviews, and the price just $99 on contract for past flagships is hard to beat. No word yet how much T-Mobile USA, which recently did away with postpaid contracts and cellphone subsidies, will charge for a Lumia 925, but no doubt it will be less than an iPhone 5 or a Samsung Galaxy S sets you back at America’s fourth-largest wireless operator. There’s no release date yet, but it’s coming: Many industry watchers have said we will get an announcement by the end of this month, with a launch date of sometime in July.
