Open Source Networking: Vyatta IPv6 Phase-2 Certification

Vyatta, the company that bills itself as the open source alternative to Cisco Systems, has completed their Phase-2 Certification of IPv6. Translation: Vyatta’s NetworkOS software can now support the continuing growth of new protocols. Here are the quick details…

With Vyatta verifying their implementation of the IPv6 core routing protocol, Vyatta claims they offer the only software-based routing and security alternative with IPv6 functionality, too. Future-proofing and ease of interoperability seem to be Vyatta’s goals, along with make the transition from IPv4 to IPv6 easier.

IPv6 certification, in the most basic of terms, means that their product has met “strong requirements” implemented by the IPv6 Ready Logo Committee. With this notch on their belt, Vyatta also pushes the fact that their networking solutions run on standard x86 hardware — which means potential cost savings and flexibility in deployment.
