Apple Joins With Unisys For Government Macs

On the outside, Apple might seem really focused on the consumer, but they care about businesses, too. It’s true. But instead of going it alone, Apple has asked Unisys Corp to sell and take care of business and governmental Mac solutions to help expand that commitment, according to published reports. Here’s the update…

Tip of the hat goes to Bloomberg Businessweek for reporting on the — fairly simple — new partnership. Unisys will provide maintenance, sales and various other services to business and governmental agencies who are using Macintosh computers. The deal was inked October 2010, but the terms of the deal have not been disclosed.

Apple cares about the business side of their gadgets, too, especially since Jobs detailed that the iPhone has been deployed or tested by 80% of Fortune 500 companies. The iPad follows suit with a 65% on Fortune 100 companies. With that adoption rate, Unisys will also be helping that mobile Apple products play nice with company infrastructure.

Bloomberg says Apple won’t disclose how big a chunk of their $65.2 billion pie is made up of governmental and business transactions, but Apple has made a concerted effort to increase those customers.

More interesting than that, is Bloomberg’s assertion that before the Unisys partnership, Unisys created iPhone applications for governmental clients, including a border patrol app for the US Department of Homeland Security.

Unisys is expected to continue this trend with the new Apple agreement, especially because they invested in engineering a high level of security into the apps to make sure they’re up to government compliance.

This blogger thinks this partnership has the potential to change the computing landscape quickly in a few years.
