LogMeIn recently changed the pricing structure of its LogMeIn Central and LogMeIn Pro products, which could force some managed service providers to pay more to use the company's remote control software.
TeamViewer released TeamViewer 10, the most recent version of its online meeting and remote control software, last month. The company still offers a free version of its remote control software for non-business use. TeamViewer 10 allows users to share files via cloud storage services Box, Dropbox, Google Drive and OneDrive.
Join.me is a meeting service (free and pay) from LogMeIn that doubles as a remote control service, too. PCWorld, however, points out that join.me is NOT suited for unattended remote control, which makes it only a partial replacement for LogMeIn. However, CNET provides instructions on how to use join.me for remote control. Keep in mind, however, that join.me is a LogMeIn product, so if you are trying to avoid the company entirely, this is not for you.
Chrome Remote Desktop is a Google Chrome extension that allows users to set up a computer for remote access from any other Chrome browser. AboutTech noted that this extension enables users to provide both spontaneous support and remote access to unattended computers and servers as well.
ShowMyPC offers a free remote computer access application that does not require an IP address to set up a session (it uses a temporary password instead). With the free version of ShowMyPC, each session is limited to one hour.
Windows Remote Desktop Connection lets users connect a computer running Windows from another computer running Windows that’s connected to the same network or to the Internet. The Enterprise, Professional and Ultimate versions of Windows include Remote Desktop Connection with remote control capabilities.
VNC Viewer from RealVNC is remote control software that is free and generally available. It also has no limits on the number of computers you can access or how long you can control them remotely.
AeroAdmin offers remote access to unattended computers and servers. This software can be run in OS user-free space (before user login) so that you can reboot a remote computer and still access it remotely.
Firnass, aka Java Remote Desktop, is a java remote desktop control and desktop sharing application that works over the Internet and even behind firewalls. The beta version of Firnass is currently available for free.
