Manage Storage Via iPhone: Xiotech has an App for That
Xiotech, known for data storage, has a new app up its sleeve. It’s called ISEview, and it runs on the iPhone (and iPad.) Looking for an excuse to use the iPhone or iPad in the enterprise? Need some more proof that the iPhone works in the enterprise? Read on to see how this new app potentially makes monitoring storage easy.
ISEview turns your iPhone into a real-time Intelligent Storage Element (ISE) monitoring system (obviously for Xiotech’s hardware), complete with component status, and a plethora of other system information. A cursory glance at the screen shots show a lot of data in a small amount of space, which is why Xiotech says they’ll be launching an iPad-compatible (we think this means ‘specific’) application very soon.
If you’re curious about the inner workings of the software, Xiotech says they developed the app using their CorteX API, which is based on RESTful architecture. The ‘killer-app’ function of the ISEview is that the CorteX API allows for Xiotech’s ISE tech to be leveraged easily with “fully on-demand application resource “that ‘unlocks’ control and automation of storage allocation and other management goodies.
So why the sudden decision for an iPhone app? Brian Reagan, senior vice president of marketing and business development at Xiotech explained…
“We launched CorteX as a way to put the power of ISE directly into the hands of customers, partners and developers and let them quickly optimize it for their own environments. From chargeback to automated provisioning and telemetry, CorteX streamlines storage management and unlocks tremendous storage value. ISEview is a perfect example of how CorteX can be used to make storage both extremely powerful, and extremely simple.”
Xiotech has built a community around CorteX and is encouraging discussion and development of CortexX-enabled applications.

In the meantime, it’s encouraging to see company’s taking the iPhone platform as a serious enterprise development platform. This blogger hopes that it quickly turns into a trend, since the iPad’s screen real-estate lends itself to a lot of practical applications.
