It’s not a huge number considering the size of the company, but the holiday season won’t be as happy for roughly 1,000 Verizon employees.

The communications giant plans to consolidate some product teams, resulting in buyout offers to what amounts to about 0.6 percent of its 178,000-strong workforce, a source told Bloomberg. While not commenting specifically on the layoffs, Verizon told the financial news site in an email that it is “always looking for ways to make the business more efficient.”

Most of the layoff news surrounding the big carriers as of late has involved Sprint, which continues to lose customers to its rivals. The Overland Park, Kansas-based operator has had multiple job-cut announcements this year, the most recent news coming earlier this month – that it would slash 2,000 jobs.

Verizon’s wireless revenue continued its uphill climb last quarter, but its profit fell short of what analysts were expecting.
