Motorola i1 Debuts at Boost Mobile; Sprint-Bound July 25

Sprint is rolling out the brand-new Motorola i1 smartphone online this coming Sunday, July 25. If youd prefer a prepaid plan, you can pick it up now at Boost Mobile retail outlets. Not in a hurry?  Youll find it in Sprint retail stores on August 8.

The i1 is the latest Android-based smartphone in whats becoming a crowded market, but this one could be a bargain. Unlike most smartphones that debut at $199, the i1 is available for $149.99 after rebates and if you sign up for a two-year service agreement.

Key specifications include:

  • Push e-mail syncs business and personal e-mail, calendar and contacts

  • Multimedia suite includes a 5MP camera and 3.1 HVGA display

  • Web access, with availability of thousands of applications from the Android market

  • PTT toggle option allows multitasking to view e-mail, messaging and more while talking

  • GPS

Wireless enthusiasts got a chance to see the i1 for the first time at the CTIA show earlier this year. Motorola and Sprint are marketing it as a rugged device that can stand up to some tough environmental tests, including water, wind-blown dust and other weather events. Its also supposed to be able to withstand drops better than other phones. In other words, it can take a licking, but keep on surfing.
