Ericsson Demonstrates Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Service

Ericsson is conducting a live demonstration of mobile TV using its Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Service (MBMS) at this weeks 3GSM World Congress.

MBMS facilitates mobile broadcasting of multimedia services such as mobile TV over existing 3G networks. The demonstration will showcase mobile TV on a prototype U365 mobile platform.

The demonstration follows Ericsson’s completion of its MBMS trial in 2006. The company plans a commercial rollout in 2008.

MBMS complements the unicast and HSPA (high-speed packet access) applications employed in mobile networks by utilizing existing infrastructure to add broadcast capabilities.

Ericsson also is demonstrating its long-term evolution (LTE) system supporting multiple input/multiple output (MIMO) antenna technology.

LTE is the next mobile broadband network standard, defined by 3GPP (Third Generation Partnership Project), set for release in 2007, Ericsson said.

The LTE demonstration encompasses a variety of applications and showcase speeds up to 144mbps on a 20MHz carrier in the 2.6GHz frequency band, the company said.

LTE supports operations in the paired and unpaired spectrums. Channel bandwidths of 1.25-20MHz are supported. LTE enables spectrum utilization for both legacy and future wireless frequency bands.
