Symantec Dumps Data-Storage Service

Symantec Corp., which sells through partners, will no longer offer Backup Exec.cloud, a data-backup service, come January.

The security software giant started notifying customers of the change this month. Symantec is trying to distance itself a bit from the traditional PC market as tablets and other devices start to dominate, Bloomberg reports.

“Customers want features such as synch and share and mobile access,” the company told the financial website. “Backup Exec.cloud was not designed with these features in mind. … [We will] focus on more productive and feature-rich, cloud-based applications which include this type of functionality.”

The changes in the PC market have taken a toll on Symantec’s business, and Steve Bennett, who was appointed CEO last year, has made some job cuts and restructured the company’s sales organization in order to turn the business around.

Backup Exec.cloud was a contributor to a 6 percent revenue decline in the company’s information-management segment that includes products, Bloomberg said.
