What Digital Transformation Is and Is Not

Digital transformation is all about creating new possibilities. It’s a big, important idea, and, as with all big and important ideas, everyone wants to be a part of it. That’s great, except that lately there have been a lot of vendors, providers and partners that are throwing the “digital transformation” term around without anything to back it up.

It’s a big, important idea, and, as with all big and important ideas, everyone wants to be a part of it. That’s great, except that lately there have been a lot of vendors, providers and partners that are throwing the “digital transformation” term around without anything to back it up. Indeed, it’s easy to say you can help a customer achieve digital transformation, but it’s quite another thing to actually do it.

To ensure that everyone is on the same page, and to help customers evaluate and procure the products that will be most valuable to them, here is what digital transformation is—and is not:

  • Digital transformation is not a single departmental or workgroup idea. It is a company-wide initiative based on collaboration between business and IT leaders who recognize that technology is critical to achieving business goals.

  • Digital transformation is not the implementation of any one product or service. Digital transformation is the strategic use—over time–of digital technology to drive nimble innovation, to find better ways of working, to adopt inventive business models, and to deliver engaging new customer experiences.

  • Digital transformation is not the public cloud. The public cloud is a big part of digital transformation, to be sure, but digital transformation is more than that:  it is a strategic integration of on-premise software systems, and public, private and hybrid cloud technology—all enabled, managed and secured in a software-defined data center leveraging converged and hyper-converged infrastructure.

  • Digital transformation is not just about solutions. Digital transformation is about helping customers achieve business outcomes. To achieve true digital transformation, partners must be plugged into customers business outcome needs—and ready, willing and able to deliver on those needs in near real time.
