A new survey from IT optimization software provider TeamQuest revealed that inefficient systems are often major problems for IT managers.

The “TeamQuest 2014 Global IT Management Survey” showed that the majority of IT managers named efficiency in IT systems as their top concern, and 93 percent said they believe IT optimization and performance analytics tools could help them make their IT systems more efficient.

Survey researchers also found that 95 percent of IT managers said they believe the success of their data centers depends on both IT optimization and performance analytics.

“IT professionals around the globe seem to agree that their data centers are more reliant on IT optimization tools, proper capacity planning and the ability to use analytics,” Per Bauer, TeamQuest’s director of global services, said in a prepared statement. “Not only are [these tools] proving to have a significant impact throughout the enterprise, delivering on everything from preventing cloud outages to improving overall business productivity, but they are also allowing IT the time they need to focus on improvements rather than incidents.”

Other survey results included:

  • 89 percent of IT managers said they believe IT optimization and performance analytics tools would help their IT departments become more productive.

  • 74 percent of IT managers who said they use IT optimization, performance analytics tools or both reported that these tools helped their IT departments become more efficient.

  • 63 percent of IT managers said their organizations have experienced a cloud outage.

The TeamQuest survey was conducted between October 29 and November 16 and included responses from 419 IT managers.

How can IT managers make their IT systems more efficient?

Bauer told Talkin’ Cloud that he believes a step-by-step approach to IT systems management is key for IT professionals worldwide.

He also noted IT managers can leverage IT optimization and performance analytics tools, including data collection and advanced modeling technologies, to find the most efficient IT systems configurations.

“Start with solid performance data collection so you know what resources your IT services are consuming. Understand the service levels you need to meet,” he said. “Find systems which appear to have excess resources and are meeting or exceeding service levels. Start with these systems and ‘take away’ resources, [and] at the same time, look for systems which are not meeting service levels and appear to be resource constrained [and] add resources as needed.”
