Netgear ProSecure: A Match for Security Resellers?

Netgear ProSecure on TheVARguyYou’re a networking company with traditional hardware trying to compete during the recession. How do you excite resellers while generating media buzz? In the case of Netgear, the company has launched ProSecure — a line of security appliances tied to a cloud service. The Netgear effort includes partnerships with Commtouch and Kaspersky Lab. Here’s the scoop.

First, some full disclosure: The VAR Guy will be attending Kaspersky Lab’s partner conference (on Kaspersky’s tab) Feb. 6 in Puerto Rico. Our resident blogger plans to skip the beaches and will be blogging like a madman during the conference.

Now, back to the blog at hand. Netgear certainly needed to shake up its product line. Routers and switches have been its bread and butter. But during the recession, those traditional Netgear offerings have faced intense pricing pressures, notes Barron’s.

New Directions

Meanwhile, technologies such as storage, security and cloud computing are holding up relatively well during the economic downturn.

Eager to cash in on two of those three trends, Netgear’s ProSecure Security Threat Management (STM) product line offers enterprise-class security to small businesses, thanks to  a simplified licensing model and ongoing security updates from Netgear’s cloud service, asserts Jason Leung, Netgear’s senior product line manager for SMB Security

The folks over at bMighty.com offer solid technical background on the Netgear ProSecure STM line, summarizing the product family as follows:

“Sitting between your company’s firewall and the rest of your network, the STM line blocks spam, removes email-borne malware, and — unlike many similar security appliances — also provides protection against Web-based malware in a single device.”
