Dan Haurey, president of Mount Arlington, N.J.-based Exigent Technologies, shares three suggestions he’d apply if he were launching an MSP from scratch today:

1. Be born in the cloud – Cloud is here to stay, and there is no going back.  

We’d be born in the cloud.  

We would host no infrastructure of our own, nor would we host any infrastructure for clients.  

Everything, including our PSA would be in the cloud, preferably Microsoft Azure.

This approach keeps things simple and redirects brain power and ingenuity to higher-value activities.

2. Ensure technical capability and competency – We’d have custom software development capability and strong coding competency from the start.  

The ability to deliver real value to customers today is dependent upon integrating different platform as a service (PaaS) and software as a service (SaaS) solutions, as well as working with vendor API’s and customer data, in all its forms.  

This means writing code to make it all work.

3. Manage by the numbers – I’d have laser focus on managing the business by the numbers and perfect the customer experience.  

Avoid trying to build our own anything, such as BDR, security-as-a-service.  

Someone else has already done that better than you.  

I’d begin and operate day to day with the exit in mind – building a business of the greatest possible value.

Starting from scratch gives you an opportunity to build a business model based on best-in-class financial and other performance metrics.
