Why You Need to Take Your Backup and Disaster Recovery to the MAX

As you’ll have no doubt seen in the press, Orlando, Fla.-based backup company Replibit was recently acquired by eFolder. It’s not a surprising move, as eFolder was lacking its own solution for disaster recovery (DR). So, what is so special about Replibit?

There are a few core technologies that make Replibit interesting:

  1. Chain free backups – They tout an impressive ability to not rely on incremental backup chains, which speeds up the recovery process. This is largely due to their reliance on image-based backups, which eliminate much of the de-duplication and compression necessary with file-level backups.

  2. Nightly Boot Checks – This dips slightly into the RaaS (Recovery as a Service) landscape, where protected systems are booted, and a screen shot taken to validate their backups are working successfully.

  3. Local Vault – Replibit’s use of local “vaults” (which are simply locally running VM appliances) translates into a cost savings for partners who aren’t forced to buy proprietary backup hardware.

Managed Service Providers (MSPs) are looking for the most flexible DR solution they can find to meet the varying needs of their clients. This is why I believe MAX Backup has the tools our customers need for success.

  • File and Image-level Backups – While image level backups do provide a very fast and efficient means of backing up and recovering systems, sometimes all that needs recovering is a subset of data, such as an application database, the contents of a folder on a file server or even a single file. MAX Backup supports both types of backups to maximize protection at the level you need it.

  • Application-Aware Backup – Even image-level backups may not capture an application database in a consistent state, ensuring its ability to recover. By being aware of the applications being protected – such as Active Directory, Exchange, SharePoint, SQL Server, and Oracle – MAX Backup makes recovering specific Tier 1 applications dependable.

  • True Cloud-Based Storage – Like Replibit, we believe it’s important to have an ability to backup to, and recover from, both local and remote storage. While Replibit utilizes “vaults” that can be stored on-site at the customer or at a partner’s datacenter, for those partners simply wanting to add DR to their list of services, they’ll either need to build up some resemblance of a datacenter, or host vaults, at each customer’s site. MAX Backup provides turnkey, cloud-based storage to make entering the world of DR effective and easy.

  • Local Storage – Replibit’s vaults are hardened Linux distributions. With most customers running (and, therefore, MSPs supporting) Windows, needing to support a one-off instance of Linux as part of your core services may be less than desirable. MAX Backup can use your commodity storage for on-site backups.

  • Many, Many Recovery Methods – Not every disaster is the same, requiring you to have a number of recovery options. MAX Backup supposed instant virtualization to both local and cloud-based targets, P2V, V2V, BMR, and Continuous Recovery, giving MSPs the recovery flexibility they need regardless of what disaster strikes.

  • PSA Integrations – Part of needing to expand your service offering also means finding a solution that integrates with your existing PSA to simplify operations in the backend. In addition to the support for ConnectWise shared by Replibit, MAX Backup also integrates with Autotask and Parallels.

Replibit’s attention by eFolder is well-founded. They have some very cool tech that provides those partners focusing on customers with Windows environments an ability to recover systems. But, for those environments that are mixed (Mac, Linux or Windows) you will likely need additional levels of backup, integration, and recovery granularity to meet the specific needs of each of your customers.
