Managed Backup Demands FTP, SFTP Support

By CloudBerry Lab Guest Blog 2

When it comes to cloud-based backup and disaster recovery, MSPs are looking to innovate while also continuing to leverage some classic technologies. A case in point: Managed backup services need remote FTP and SFTP support across on-premises servers and hosted storage. Here's why.

First, a refresher course for those where aren't familiar with classic FTP technology. File Transfer Protocol is a standard network protocol. It allows users to transfer files from one host to another host over TCP/IP networks — such as the Internet. FTP is built on a client-server architecture and uses separate control and data connections between the client and the server.

But wait: If most MSPs and customers increasingly leverage cloud computing and browser-based services, why is FTP still important?

The answer is simple: Many smaller MSPs and VARs already own storage accounts with their hosting companies. And in most cases, the storage accounts allow FTP/SFTP access.

And what about the on-premises servers? It's easy to configure FTP/ SFTP access on customers' existing Windows or Linux servers. Translation: MSPs can take advantage of existing hardware and storage, and start offering the managed backup service.

Not by coincidence, CloudBerry Lab's Managed Backup platform for VARs, MSPs and IT service providers offers that type of FTP/SFTP support. Moreover, it allows channel partners to roll out white label cloud backup services linked to Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3), Glacier, Windows Azure and OpenStack cloud platforms.
