Managed Services Acquisition: ILS Technology Buys ComBrio

ILS Acquires ComBrio for Managed ServicesWhat happens when you take a hot technology industry (like managed services) and combine it with a cold economy? The answer: A whirlwind of mergers and acquisitions. The latest example involves ILS Technology acquiring “substantially all of the operating assets” of ComBrio Inc., a managed services software provider. Here are the details.

This is the second MSP-oriented acquisition we’ve spotted this week, and the 24th MSP-related investment we’ve seen this year. To see all the deals, visit our MSPmentor M&A Tracker.

Ironically, I visited ComBrio’s headquarters almost exactly one year ago to learn about their business targeting all types of IP devices. Meanwhile, ILS Technology LLC, positions itself as “an industry leader in enabling intelligence through connectivity.”

By acquiring ComBrio’s technology, ILS will:

“expand its footprint in the Managed Service Provider market by capitalizing on ComBrio’s Virtual Service Infrastructure (VSI) that provides simple, secure monitoring and access to a wide variety of information technology devices and systems.”

Beyond Traditional IP Devices

Still, this isn’t a traditional MSP industry deal. Most MSP platforms focus primarily on remote server, desktop, laptop and network administration. ComBrio’s software, in stark contrast, targets higher-end enterprises and reaches into all types of IP-enabled devices — including medical instruments.

Following ComBrio’s lead, many MSP software companies are expanding their focus beyond traditional PC management. During the ConnectWise Partner Summit in September 2007, CEO Arnie Bellini described how ConnectWise’s software would ultimately manage all IP-enabled devices.

We’ll provide updates as ILS digests ComBrio — and as M&A activity continues across the managed services landscape.
