Mobile device management (MDM) is the top tool used to secure bring-your-own-device (BYOD) environments worldwide, according to a new study.

The study by IT research firm TechNavio showed MDM represents more than 90 percent of the global BYOD security market, with mobile application management (MAM) taking a small slice of the pie.

According to the firm, the demand for MDM is a direct result of the growing use of personal mobile devices in the workplace. TechNavio also noted that there will be more growth in the MDM market in the coming years.

A TechNavio’s senior analyst said in a statement that the BYOD security market “is still in its nascent stages,” adding that there’s opportunity for “pure-play vendors in developing software kits at affordable prices that can change the market acceptance of these products.”

TechNavio said its analysts evaluated the impact of market drivers, challenges and trends, and features data on product segmentations, vendor shares, growth rate by revenue and an evaluation of the different buying criteria in order of importance.

A separate TechNavio study in November projected that the MDM enterprise software market will rise at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 21.3 percent over the period 2012-2016.
