Polycom Continues Motorola Love with RealPresence Mobile

Back in March 2011 we wrote about Polycom and Motorola teaming up to bring Polycom’s UC Intelligent Core to the Motorola Xoom, making the Xoom an instant group video device. Jump forward to today, and Polycom is continuing its relationship with Motorola by including the RealPresence Mobile application with the new Motorola Xyboard (the spiritual successor to the Xoom). Here’s the scoop …

The software allows for presence, video chat and other collaboration tools to run seamlessly on the Xyboard, leveraging Polycom‘s infrastructure back-end for unified communications (UC) in the enterprise and SMB. If this all sounds familiar, you’d be right: Back in October 2011 Polycom launched RealPresence Mobile for iPhone and Android devices.

Polycom’s continued collaboration with Motorola is worth examining. It’s nothing special to ship software with a tablet, but Motorola may be looking to leverage Polycom‘s UC gravitas to help propel it deeper into the enterprise space. It’s hard to guess where Motorola Mobility is headed, especially because of its ownership by Google.

Polycom boasts the RealPresence Mobile has been downloaded “more than 25,000 times,” —  not an impressive number when stacked up against what’s happening on the Google Marketplace or Apple App Store, but consider that this figure could be the number of enterprise organizations that have tested out Polycom‘s mobile app. Not every download equals one user. That’s good new for Polycom, and potentially good news for prospective business tablet buyers who see the Xyboard comes pre-installed with Polycom functionality.
