Dell KACE: Mobile Device Management Meets Systems Management

dell_kace

Dell KACE, an appliance-based systems management platform, is rapidly gaining mobile device management (MDM) capabilities. A prime example: The new KACE K3000 Mobile Management Appliance extends systems management to tablets and smartphones running Apple iOS and Google Android. But don’t call Dell (NASDAQ: DELL) another MDM platform provider. Here’s why.

Ken Drachnik, director of product marketing for Dell KACE, says MDM is a natural extension to the systems management market, and he doesn’t see standalone MDM platforms surviving over the long haul. MSPmentor has a similar view of the industry — though MSPs are using a range of standalone and integrated MDM solutions. (Stay tuned for results from the sixth-annual MSPmentor 100 survey, which closes Dec. 28, 2012.)

To drive home his point, Drachnik described how Dell is connecting the dots, gradually, between its various systems management and mobile management solutions — including offerings from KACE, Quest Software and Wyse.

For its part, Dell says the new KACE K3000 mobile management appliance supports:

  • Single-step secure setup gets users up and running quickly and includes over the air provisioning of K3000 agents to devices.

  • Smartphones and tablets such  as Apple iOS 4.5 and 6 iPhones and iPads, Android 2.2+ C2DM-enabled smartphones and tablets.

  • Profile management, device lock and unlock, remote enterprise wipe and remote factory reset.

  • Application management for pushing corporate applications on to both corporate as well as personal mobile devices.

  • A single pane of glass and single-sign on and to view and manage all mobile devices, PCs and servers from a single console.

Dell says the new K3000 Mobile Management Appliance will ship in early 2013. A limited release will be rolled out to KACE customers in January 2013, the company added.
