Take a look back at Black Friday, and you’ll find more than just spectacular deals (though, I did take full advantage of them). Did you see much in terms of new mobile devices sneaking onto your clients’ business networks? Probably not, but a new IBM (NYSE:IBM) study suggests that 2012 marked a banner year on a number of fronts with mobile traffic growing by more than 67 percent. Will this affect your mobile device management (MDM) strategy? Here’s what you need to know about the data.

Take the following key points into consideration the next time your company re-evaluates its MDM strategy:

  • According to the report, mobile purchases soared. About 24 percent of consumers used a mobile device to visit a retailer’s site, which is up from 14.3 percent in 2011.

  • Apple’s iPad generated more traffic than any other tablet or smartphone, reaching nearly 10 percent of online shopping. The iPhone followed close behind at 8.7 percent, while Android’s share was 5.5 percent.

  • The Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPad dominated tablet traffic at 88.3 percent followed by the Barnes and Noble (NYSE:BKS) Nook at 3.1 percent, Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) Kindle at 2.4 percent and the Samsung Galaxy at 1.8 percent.

What do these points mean for the bring your own device (BYOD) trend and your MDM strategy? With the increase of users using mobile devices for personal use, expect more mobile devices in the workplace in 2013.
