Apple iOS 5.01 and Full Siri Jailbreak Hit — with Caveats
Apple iOS 5.01 users can finally enjoy the jailbreak lifestyle, thanks to the intrepid efforts of the iPhone DevTeam. What’s more, iPhone 4 users can now use Siri, 100 percent functional, but there’s yet another snag. Read on for the deets …
Fresh from the iPhone DevTeam is a new blog post detailing the untethered jailbreak for iOS 5.01. The issue? It’s for non-A5 devices only, so the iPhone 4S and the iPad 2 are left out in the cold for now. The good news is iPhone 4 owners — like me — can get back to their jailbroken applications on iOS 5, especially those tethering apps.
And if you’re in the process of jailbreaking your iPhone 4, why not download Spire from the Cydia app store? Spire, the latest Siri hack from “chpwn,” actually downloads Siri from Apple’s own servers and installs it on your iPhone. But Siri won’t actually communicate with Apple without an iPhone 4S acting as an authentication proxy. More simply put, if you don’t have access to an iPhone 4S, you still won’t be using Siri on your iPhone 4 since you have to piggyback off the iPhone 4S authentication keys.
It’s a little closer to a true Siri hack, and a little less “proof of concept.” Apple implemented some impressive measures to ensure Siri will only available to iPhone 4S users for now. Maybe that will change someday, but more than likely, pre-iPhone 4S users will just have to wait and buy a iPhone 4S or the mythic iPhone 5, whenever it arrives.
Escape from Apple’s walled garden, and you and up living the life of a fugitive, forever watching over your shoulder for the next software update that will lock you up again.
This is not the way of a self-respecting person.
Really? All I’ve had to do is not click the “Update to new version” button in iTunes until the jailbreak for that version is available. In exchange, I have access to some very good apps and complete control over MY iPhone. Somehow, I’ve managed to keep my self-respect intact.
