Veeam has plans to release a new backup solution for desktop and laptop endpoints in small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) to IT professionals — and it’s free.

Announced on Wednesday at VeeamOn 2014, Veeam Endpoint Backup Free works as a standalone solution for IT professionals in need of a way to back up endpoints for customers. It doesn’t, however, support all endpoints. The Baar, Switzerland-based backup, disaster recovery and virtualization management solutions provider designed the solution to be compatible with Windows-based laptops and desktops only.

While additional Veeam products are not needed to leverage the solution, IT admins do have the option to integrate it with Veeam Backup & Replication if it is present in the environment.

With Veeam Endpoint Backup Free, all of the installation and configuration is done on the endpoint itself. There’s no centralized management interface for deploying the software to endpoints, which is why Veeam does not consider this a play for the enterprise.

Veeam Endpoint Backup Free, generally available in early 2015, gives IT professionals the option to back up data to an internal or external hard drive, a network attached storage (NAS) share or a Veeam backup repository.

When recovering, admins can perform a bare-metal restore to the same or different hardware, a volume-level restore or a file-level restore.

“One of the things that I find amazing is that Veeam was started with a free product,” said Doug Hazelman, senior director of product strategy at Veeam. “Veeam wouldn’t exist today if we would not have released FastSCP back in 2006.”
