Docker has hired a new senior vice president of engineering to assist its growing the global engineering team, expanding its partner ecosystem and helping advance its technology.

The San Francisco-based open source platform company on Thursday said it has hired Marianna Tessel, a former VMware (VMW) executive, to take on the role.

“Tessel has over twenty years of industry experience, which most recently included her role as vice president of engineering at VMware,” said David Messina, vice president of marketing at Docker. “She has a great understanding of the landscape and has been able to witness Docker’s evolution closely while at VMware. She will leverage these previous experiences to help grow the technology ecosystem around Docker.”

Before taking on her role at VMware, where she had worked for more than six years, she was vice president of engineering for Ariba, a cloud-based business commerce provider (now part of SAP, an enterprise application software company).

Prior to that, Tessel was part of General Magic, a mobile computing company that developed a new kind of handheld communications device, where she started as an engineer and ended as vice president.

Shee will be responsible for overseeing all of engineering at Docker, a company that provides a platform for developers and system administrators to build, ship, run and orchestrate distributed applications.

“Tessel’s vast experience in the cloud and virtualization space and with leading and growing engineering teams made her an ideal candidate,” Messina said. “We have great faith in her ability to help drive the ongoing success of our Docker ecosystem partners.”
