Does CEO Matt Nachtrab has some cloud surprises up his sleeve? Perhaps so -- maybe even a patent for LabTech Software.

LabTech Software has filed to earn a patent related to its cloud computing expertise. While a patent has yet to be issued, this is the latest example of an RMM (remote monitoring and management) software company pushing further into cloud computing with home-grown intellectual property.

LabTech CEO Matt Nachtrab briefly mentioned the patent filing during an interview at IT Nation, a major VAR and MSP conference hosted by ConnectWise. LabTech offers on-premises software, but the company also built some unique cloud technology as part of a relationship with Doyenz, plus LabTech's software is also available to run in Amazon's cloud.

There's another interesting angle here. It involves RMM software companies trying to get ahead of the curve on cloud with proactive monitoring solutions.

Boundary, for instance, has been hyping its ability to practively predict cloud outages in recent weeks — having spotted problems at both Amazon and Microsoft before those companies disclosed cloud hiccups. Boundary CEO Gary Read previously held the same post at Nimsoft, a major RMM software providers acquired by CA Technologies.

Meanwhile, Nachtrab said LabTech's cloud approach on Amazon typically attracts MSPs seeking 25 to 200 agents to manage customer systems.
