randy-mottTalk about ironic timing: Hewlett-Packard CIO Randy Mott (pictured) is leaving the company just as HP is piecing together a public cloud strategy. Mott’s departure arrives amid a broader HP executive shake-up. While HP searches for a new CIO, Talk’ Cloud has to wonder: Who is designing and executing HP’s public cloud strategy?
I’ve posed that question to HP’s PR team and await an answer. In the meantime I have to concede: I’m a bit confused by HP’s public cloud strategy so far. HP CEO Leo Apotheker back in March 2011 and again in April 2011 promised that HP would counter Apple iTunes, Amazon Web Services and other major cloud providers with a major public cloud initiatives. Since that time details about the HP public cloud effort have been sketchy at best, with more updates expected in late 2011 and early 2012.
Sure, HP has announced some channel-centric cloud strategies. The most recent development is the HP CloudAgile strategy for service providers and channel partners. But the elephant in the room remains the HP public cloud… and the potential implications for channel partners.
Does the HP public cloud effort remain on track amid Mott’s departure? And how involved was Mott even involved in the public cloud initiative? HP followers know Mott is widely credited with consolidating HP’s worldwide data centers, and he previously held top IT posts at Dell and Wal-Mart. With that type of resume I suspect Mott had some strong opinions about how HP should formulate a public cloud strategy.
I wonder if Mott’s views on the cloud matched those of HP Leo Apotheker? If I hear thoughts from HP PR I’ll be sure to offer some updates.
