Rackspace (RAX) updated its hybrid cloud offering with new security capabilities, increased scalability and an improved user experience. RackConnect v3 was designed to meet customers’ needs for public cloud scalability in a hybrid IT environment.

RackConnect is typical in many ways of a hybrid cloud solution, in that it provides customers with a combination of traditional dedicated hardware and networks with various services deployed in the public cloud. In the latest version release, RackConnect has joined the growing software-defined networking (SDN) technology segment, with more SDN-focused features.

“RackConnect v3 redefines hybrid cloud by offering enterprise customers a migration path to the public cloud with none of the downside,” said John Engates, CTO at Rackspace, in a prepared statement. “This unique hybrid cloud technology allows our customers to take advantage of our managed public cloud, private cloud and dedicated hosting offerings with a seamless integration backed by Fanatical Support. It is a unique offering in the market today.”

Basically, that means it’s a managed cloud offering like all other Rackspace cloud services. A few of the new or enhanced features include:

  • An expansion of security of dedicated environments into the Rackspace Public Cloud through the integration of isolated Rackspace Cloud Networks to keep traffic segregated.

  • As much as a 5X increase in scalability, which decreases the time needed to provision new resources and helps reduce the risk of build failures by introducing seamless Rackspace Cloud Server provisioning.

  • A shift of the complexity away from the customer and toward software (including SDN functions) and automation for a better user experience.

  • More device options, including the addition of the Brocade ADX load balancer, the Cisco ASA firewall series and the F5 BIP-IP local traffic manager.

The new features will be generally available Oct. 23 to customers with dedicated and cloud resources in all U.S. and international regions.
