HP: Drag And Drop VMs From One Cloud Data Center to Another?

Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ) has unveiled virtualization software that will allow cloud services providers (CSPs) to more easily move VMs from one data center to another. In theory, that means CSPs will be able to redeploy virtualized applications (say, Exchange Server, SharePoint, Lync and more) in a matter of moments based on real-time customer needs and workloads.

HP’s secret sauce involves:

  • HP Ethernet Virtual Interconnect (EVI), which can connect up to eight geographically dispersed data centers in minutes, eliminating manual configuration tasks, HP claims.

  • HP Multitenant Device Context (MDC) software delivers increased security for multitenant cloud applications, eliminating the comingling of data from different applications or departments, HP asserts.

  • HP StoreVirtual virtual storage appliance (VSA), which allows CSPs to build storage pools on any x86 server using VMware or Microsoft Hyper-V hypervisors. As a result, clients can move data across heterogeneous servers, hypervisors and data center locations to better meet organization needs, HP claims.

Those solutions are designed for enterprises and cloud services providers (CSPs) to use in their own data centers. HP, meanwhile, continues to build out its own public cloud. And it’s a safe bet those EVI, MDC and VSA solutions will be embedded in the HP Cloud, which offers a 99.95 percent SLA (service level agreement) to customers.

HP CEO Meg Whitman has been repositioning the company for the cloud. But the company remains in transition, and that transition is expected to take several years to play out.
