Hewlett-Packard: CIO Departure Won't Impact HP Public Cloud

Hewlett-Packard CIO Randy Mott is heading for the exit amid an executive shake-up at the company. However, the HP Public Cloud team — led by Executive VP Shane Robison (pictured) — remains in place and continues to march forward with the public cloud build-out. That’s the core message from an HP spokesman to TalkinCloud.

According to the HP spokesman, “Mott’s departure has no impact on our public cloud plans.”

The HP Public Cloud effort is led by Shane Robison, executive VP and chief strategy and technology officer. “That particular business unit is under Shane,” the HP spokesman wrote. “He has a number of key execs reporting to him on this role, including Biri Singh (SVP, Cloud Services Business Unit) and Patrick Harr, (VP, Cloud Solutions).”

HP CEO Leo Apotheker began sharing details about the HP Public Cloud strategy earlier this year. An HP FAQ indicates:

“HP plans to offer public cloud services. You can expect to see our public cloud services later this year and into 2012. Our CEO also announced plans to offer an open applications marketplace that integrates consumer, enterprise and developer services. The platform will support multiple languages and will be open to third-parties. We haven’t released specific timing, so stay tuned to hear more over the coming months.”

Read between the lines and HP’s public cloud strategy sounds ambitious, potentially competing against Amazon Web Services, the Google Apps Marketplace, Microsoft Windows Azure, Apple iCloud and more.

Public Cloud Partner Program?

The big wildcard: Where do channel partners potentially fit into the HP Public Cloud strategy? Sure, the platform will be open to third parties. But will there be a specific recurring revenue model for VARs and MSPs that plug customers into the HP Public Cloud?

HP has yet to answer those questions specifically, but the company is making progress on several other channel cloud fronts. The new HP CloudAgile partner program is designed for service providers and channel partners. Also, HP VP of SMB and Channel Meaghan Kelly has been working with IT upstarts like Axcient to help VARs and MSPs discover new cloud opportunities.

Meanwhile, TalkinCloud will watch HP Executive VP Shane Robison’s progress with the HP Public Cloud — and the potential implications for channel partners.
