Amazon Web Services technology partner 2nd Watch, a provider of cloud-based management services for AWS instances, has unveiled the first of several quarterly reports to compare the most popular Amazon cloud services and instance sizes amongst its user base.

According to the 2nd Watch AWS Scorecard for July to October 2014, of 2nd Watch customers:

Additionally, when it comes to instances on Amazon’s EC2 service, there’s an interesting breakdown in the size of the instance that shows smaller ones in greater numbers. Of the instances monitored by 2nd Watch, 38 percent are small. There’s a significant gap between the next most numerous instance size, which is medium (making up 19 percent of total instances monitored).

After that are large (15 percent), 4xlarge (five percent), 2xlarge (five percent),  8xlarge (five percent) and micro (five percent).

The dominant operating system for Amazon EC2 instances is clearly Linux, which accounts for 74 percent of the total instances. Compare that to Windows, which makes up the other 26 percent. But in terms of the number of usage hours, Linux is at 69 percent and Windows is at 31 percent.

2nd Watch plans to promise the AWS Scorecard every quarter, providing some insight into what services and instances are being used by Amazon’s customers.
