Twilio Releases Elastic SIP Trunking

Twilio says it has taken SIP trunking to the next level.

The company started out as a cloud communications platform that exposes APIs so developers can add voice and text to Web and mobile applications. Now it also offers elastic SIP trunking, using the cloud to bring instant provisioning, global reach and more to ISVs and enterprises.

The service lets users scale their PSTN connectivity on-demand without long-term contracts, carrier negotiations, custom quotes or manual provisioning, Twilio said. Plus, there’s termination to almost every country, local phone numbers in 50 countries and elastic scaling. In fact, Twilio says one connection to its platform can replace hundreds of country-specific carriers.

Features include:

  • Numbers on a SIP trunk that can send and receive SMS and MMS (in some markets);

  • Data-driven routing that sends outbound calls to the best carrier;

  • One-click call recording at the SIP layer, with no additional hardware or per-user fees;

  • Failover to TwiML scripting to specify what failover logic should apply to replicate on-premises IP-PBX functions if a local Internet outage occurs;

  • Unlimited usage with fees as low as $0.004 per minute; and

  • Multi-tenanted SIP trunks with per-tenant billing records and logs so customers may track usage by department, account or use case from one master account.

“The traditional SIP trunking product and buying experience is outdated,” said Jeff Lawson, CEO and co-founder of Twilio. Now, he added, “customers will finally have access to a modern SIP trunking service that lets them innovate far faster than they’ve been able to with old-world SIP trunking offerings.”

Twilio’s elastic SIP trunking has been launched in public beta. The company sells through the indirect channel.
