What does it take to become a champion? According to Michael Jordan, “Champions do not become champions when they win an event, but in the hours, weeks, and months, and years they spend preparing for it. The victorious performance itself is merely a demonstration of their championship character.” Sportswriter and author Don Yaeger spent 25 years surrounded by championship character in action. From Jordan and Walter Payton — on whom no big college was willing to risk a scholarship — to John Wooden and Pat Riley, Yaeger watched them, interviewed them and learned from them.
