Michael Dell invades the data center at Oracle OpenWorld 2013.
Dell and Oracle (ORCL) are partnering more deeply on x86 server and infrastructure management, countering such rivals as Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) and IBM. Michael Dell announced the closer Oracle relationship and furthered his company’s data center strategy during OpenWorld 2013.
During the keynote, Dell said data centers are becoming the center of the universe for people to people, people to machines and machine-to-machine communications that will drive opportunity across the globe.
“We need to look at not just the quarter ahead, but the decade ahead, and investing for long-term success,” said Dell, an apparent reference to the company recently going private. “We were at the heart of the PC and server revolution. But our future is deep at the heart of the data center.”
Dell is now Oracle’s preferred x86 server partner, he asserted. Among the new milestones:
Dell OpenManage now integrates with Oracle Enterprise Manager, enabling customers to manage the full infrastructure stack and applications from a single management console, the company asserted.
Customers can purchase and renew Oracle software support services for Oracle Linux and Oracle VM directly from Dell.
The Dell-Oracle relationship is particularly interesting as Oracle continues to promote its own Engineered Systems as a preferred approach to multi-vendor hardware and software stacks.
