(I know: Thompson is not exactly a free and open source software programmer; he is a Unix programmer. But I think that still counts.)

Richard Stallman

"People sometimes ask me if it is a sin in the Church of Emacs to use vi. Using a free version of vi is not a sin; it is a penance. So happy hacking." Stallman was referring to the longstanding debate among free and open source software programmers about whether Emacs is a better text editor than vi. (Source.)

This is one of my favorite quotes about free and open source software. It was made in response to Richard Stallman's comments on the open-sourcing of the Qt programming library in 2000:
