Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) has blocked a Java 7 plugin to protect Mac OS X 10.6 and up users, notes The Next Web. Alas, Oracle’s (NASDAQ: ORCL) Java software has been plagued by bugs in recent weeks. The VAR Guy wonders: Would the late Steve Jobs have made this move — especially when Oracle CEO Larry Ellison ranked among Jobs’ closes friends? Hmmm…… The safe bet is Jobs would have indeed blocked the Java 7 plugin. After all, Jobs always put end-user experience ahead of industry relationships.
And Java has not been delivering a good end-user experience lately. Indeed, Oracle’s software has been hit by a range of exploits lately, triggering angst across the open source and software developer communities. ZDNet on Jan. 28 noted that holes still exist in Oracle’s Java software that could potentially leave machines open to remote execution of malicious code,
Oracle apparently is preparing a patch, to be known as Java 7 Update 12, to address Apple’s latest concerns.
Despite the issues, Oracle President Mark Hurd earlier this week described how Java is one of the key reasons that Oracle’s buyout of Sun Microsystems — completed three years ago — has paid big dividends.
